Expert Advisors and other automated trading systems depend on the trading terminal being online. If MT4 or MT5 closes, the operating system restarts, or the internet connection fails, the automation can stop until the environment is restored. This is one of the main reasons traders use a VPS for algorithmic trading.
Automation needs an always-on environment
An EA is executed by the MetaTrader terminal. It does not continue running by itself when your computer is powered down. Hosting the terminal on a VPS means the strategy can remain active on a remote Windows server while you disconnect from Remote Desktop.
Separating trading from your daily computer
A personal PC is used for browsing, software installation, updates, video calls and many other workloads. Those activities can consume CPU and memory or cause unexpected restarts. A dedicated VPS gives the trading platform its own environment, making resource usage easier to understand and manage.
Multiple EAs and terminals require planning
There is no universal rule for how many MT4 or MT5 terminals fit on a given VPS. Resource use depends on the number of charts, symbols, indicators, EAs, tick activity and how efficiently each strategy is coded.
- Start with enough RAM for Windows plus your trading terminals.
- Allow CPU headroom for market-open periods and strategy calculations.
- Use NVMe storage for responsive platform and log access.
- Monitor CPU, memory and disk usage after your EAs are running.
- Upgrade when sustained usage approaches the practical limits of the server.
VPS availability and your strategy
Continuous infrastructure reduces the chance that a local power or broadband issue stops the terminal, but no hosting platform can eliminate every possible outage. Traders should still have monitoring, sensible restart procedures and a way to verify that terminals and EAs are operating as expected.
Remote access without stopping the EA
When you disconnect from a Windows Remote Desktop session, applications normally continue running on the VPS. This lets you check the trading terminal from another computer without shutting down the server-side session.
Infrastructure supports automation — it does not validate the strategy
A fast VPS can provide a stable execution environment, but it cannot make an unprofitable strategy profitable or remove market risk. Backtesting, forward testing, position sizing and broker-specific execution behavior remain separate trading considerations.
